Over the past seven days Google users have been carrying out online searches for Lord's Resistance Army warlord Joseph Kony after a video examining the situation in Uganda went viral. Apple's latest creation the iPad 3 was also a big hit this week, appearing three times in this week's search terms with the most significant growth.
The popularity of the week's top three search terms -- "Joseph Kony," "Kony" and "Kony 2012" -- can be attributed to a video made by charity organization Invisible Children exploring the crimes committed by Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in Uganda. The video, which the charity says was created to draw attention to the issue, went viral on a massive scale -- attracting nearly 74 million views on YouTube in a mere six days -- and drew widespread coverage from a number of mainstream news outlets. Apple's latest creation the new iPad or "iPad 3" was also a popular topic, directly accounting for two of the top ten search terms, "iPad3" and "iPad 3," and probably for the tenth placed term "iPad."
The next gen tablet computing device was unveiled by Apple at a special event on March 7. It will hit stores in the USA, Canada, France and Germany on March 16 priced at $499.
Video game Mass Effect 3, developed by Bioware and published by Electronic Arts, was also a popular search term after being released on March 6. The third person shooter is the final edition of the popular Mass Effect series of games, which tell the story of Commander Shepard.
The search terms with the most significant growth worldwide in the last seven days, as measured by Google Insights and recorded March 12, were:
