Blogging is continuing to grow as a form of communication, driven largely by wel- educated women according to a blog post by online analysts Nielsen on March 7.
The Nielsen blog post on the state of the blogosphere was based on data taken from the 181 million blogs the company tracks around the world. According to the data, the majority of bloggers are young women, typically aged between 18 and 34. One in three, or 33 percent of bloggers were mothers and 52 percent of all bloggers were parents with children under 18.
The report also found that bloggers in general were well-educated with 70 percent having gone to college, and the majority of this 70 percent were graduates.
Within the US, Nielsen found, the top three blog-oriented social-networking sites, in terms of unique US visitors in October 2011, were Blogger, Wordpress and Tumblr; of these three Tumblr was the fastest growing, while Blogger with 46 unique million visitors was one of the biggest social-networking sites in the US second only to Facebook.
A November 2011 report by comScore found that the percentage of internet users in the US and the EU5 (Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the UK) who accessed social networking sites or blogs at least once a month grew by 44 percent from September 2010-2011, while those accessing such sites on a daily basis grew by 67 percent over the same period.
The continuing growth of blogging and the importance it plays in the modern media landscape is being recognized by a number of awards including the Lovie and Webby Awards, the Rodial Beautiful Awards, which honor beauty bloggers, and Saveur's Best Food Blog Awards which opened for entries for its latest edition on March 6.
