EAGLE RIVER, Wis (Reuters) – Robert Wirch and Jim Holperin, two of the 14 Wisconsin state senators who left the state in an attempt to prevent passage of an anti-union measure, won their recall elections Tuesday, according to the WisPolitics.com web site.

Wirch and Holperin were defending their seats in a special election Tuesday. Holperin had 54 percent of the vote against 46 percent for Republican challenger Kim Simac in his district with 78 percent of precincts reporting, Wispolitics.com said.

With 100 percent of the vote counted in his district, Wirch held 58 percent of the vote against 42 percent for Republican challenger Jonathan Steitz, the web site said.

Despite the recall wins, Governor Scott Walker and his Republican allies will retain control of the legislature, where the battle over public workers' union powers was waged earlier this year with mass protests, legislative maneuvering and court challenges.
