| Close to half of the world's population will use the web in 2016: Cisco Jun 1st 2012, 15:44 AFP Relax News – Fri, Jun 1, 2012 Approximately 3.4 billion people, or 45% of the world's projected population, will access the web in 2016. By then the number of devices and connections will have almost doubled and the internet will be four times bigger. "The proliferation of tablets, mobile phones, and other smart devices as well as machine-to-machine (M2M) connections are driving up the demand for connectivity," said Cisco in its Visual Networking Index Forecast, 2011-2016, published this week. "By 2016, the forecast projects there will be nearly 18.9 billion network connections―almost 2.5 connections for each person on earth, ― compared with 10.3 billion in 2011." More than half of those connections will come via devices connected over WiFi, said Cisco. Internet users in the US and China will generate the highest amounts of traffic around the globe (22 exabytes and 12 exabytes per month respectively), but the Asia Pacific region as a whole will generate the most IP traffic (40.5 exabytes per month). North America is expected to be second on the list with 27.5 exabytes per month in 2016. Good news for internet users: the average broadband speed is projected to skyrocket in the future. Broadband speeds are expected to increase from 9 megabits per second (Mbps) in 2011 to 34 Mbps in 2016. With an increase in broadband speed, you can expect video viewing to go through the roof. By Cisco's count "1.2 million video minutes -- the equivalent of 833 days (or over two years) -- would travel the Internet every second" by 2016.
