KIEV, Ukraine – Ukrainian authorities say they have shut down a popular file-sharing website, saying it violated copyright laws.

Interior Ministry Spokesman Volodymyr Polishchuk said Wednesday that Ex.ua was closed after complaints from Microsoft, Adobe and other companies.

Shortly after that website was shut down Tuesday, the Interior Ministry's own website became inoperable. Polishchuk said this could have been a work of hackers seeking revenge for the closure of Ex.ua.

Ex.ua representatives could not be immediately reached for comment.

Millions of Ukrainians have used the website since it was founded in 2009.
