Justin Timberlake: Stealth Silicon Valley angel? (Reuters)
1 Jul 2011, 12:57 am

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – As it turns out, Justin Timberlake's role as Napster founder Sean Parker in "The Social Network" was a wink and nod to the celebrity's little publicized role in driving Silicon Valley start-ups.

But his involvement in the technology industry drew public notice this week with news that Timberlake, whose character in the Oscar-nominated movie helped shape Facebook's early days, will take a stake in Myspace, the ailing social network website that New Corp is selling at a large loss.

The move -- in partnership with Specific Media -- is the latest in Timberlake's quietly expanding business and investment empire. It may also be one of his most high-profile to date, thrusting the singer-actor into a category of celebrity-turned-businessman in the mold of Ashton Kutcher.

"Fame is a highly fungible commodity," said Paul Levinson, a professor of communications and media studies at Fordham University and an author on media innovation. "It makes anything you do more likely to be successful."

Timberlake has several publicized business ventures, from jeans and clothing line William Rast and record label Tennman Records, a joint venture with Interscope Records, to 901 Silver Tequila, a name inspired by an area code in Timberlake's hometown of Memphis.

But Timberlake has been providing relatively under-the-radar angel investing to tech start-ups via his Tennman Digital, an operation based in San Francisco's tech hub.

It incubates "great ideas that we think will change how we share information, consume media, and interact with the people around us," in the interactive digital media space, according to a profile posted on techVenture, a website that pairs investors with start-ups.

Tennman Digital has funded start-up Particle, which develops micro-video application Robo.tv, among other things. The group has also provided funding to Apple iPhone gaming application developer Tapulous.

Timberlake's role at Myspace remains unclear, although he will have his own office and a staff of six that will work for him, according to Specific Media Chief Executive Tim Vanderhook.

Vanderhook said his company's expertise in technology and advertising would complement the star's innate creativity to produce a site with "high entertainment value," with original content from a community of musicians, photographers and other creative professionals.

The combination of money, an iconic image and the business acumen displayed by him in the past all increase the likelihood of success, Levinson said.

That's good news for Timberlake and Specific Media, whose investment signals optimism that the brand of Myspace can be revived.

"The one thing that's been underreported is how excited Justin is to do this. I was blown away by his excitement level," said Vanderhook in a phone interview. "I think he was blown away by his excitement level, too."

Street Fighter IV Volt tops iPhone Games of the Week

Posted June 30, 2011 6:00pm by Phil Hornshaw Tags: Games, Games of the Week

Be warned: The title leading off this week's Best Games list is a quality release, but it's going to frustrate you. That's because Street Fighter IV Volt is merely a slight update to Capcom's high quality fighting game Street Fighter IV due to the addition of online multiplayer. If it sounds like fun, you're right, it can be – until you take on some eight-year-old with an insane mastery of Ryu's fireball move and some kind of supernatural ability to anticipate every time you're even thinking about jumping. It gets frustrating, and…well, that's why this is a five-game list instead of just one. We've got four other great titles that you can play while you let the bruises to your Street Fighter ego fade.

Street Fighter IV Volt (iPhone, iPad) $0.99 (going up by $1 each day after launch)

One of the more impressive games in the App Store in terms of graphics and conversion to touch controls from a classic console gamepad or arcade joystick is Street Fighter IV. Volt is an update of Capcom's popular 2-D fighting game, with new characters (Balrog, Cody, and Vega) and a phenomenal new feature: online and local multiplayer. You can take on players in ranked or unranked matches using Game Center over a Wi-Fi-enabled connection, or beat on your friends over Bluetooth. It's a big addition to the earlier version of the game, which only let players battle computer-controlled opponents. Expect to get a little annoyed with the "cheap" special move tactics of the players online, though. Time to practice.

Freemilaum title Tiny Tower succeeds where other games in the same vein annoy. Yes, it's a time nmanagement game that makes you wait around a lot. As the owner of your own tiny tower, you construct the building layer by layer, adding floors when you earn "coins" and then deciding what to do with those floors. First you'll add apartments and rent them to "bitizen" characters who frequent your tower, but later, you'll add businesses based on the demands of your residents. The management aspects have you giving all your bitizens jobs in your stores based on their preferences, and each one will earn money by selling things to customers, which you have to keep stocked. While Tiny Tower makes you wait quite a bit while you stock things and construct floors, it also dishes out the game's premium currency, TowerBux, with relative frequency, which allow you to cut out some of the waiting. It's just enough to keep the game engaging without feeling like it's trying to dupe you into paying for premium content, which is nice. Oh, and Tiny Tower is also an addictive good time.

Continuity 2 mixes two fun game types: slide puzzles, in which you maneuver pieces of a picture arranged in a grid around the screen to make a picture, and platforming as seen in titles like Super Mario Bros. In Continuity 2, each of those sliding pictures on the grid is actually a room in the puzzle, and moving them around makes them match up in different ways. With different matches, you can steer your character into new rooms and use them to collect coins before heading for the exit of each level. The game is at once a combination of skills, allowing you to exercise your video game smarts alongside your puzzle-solving smarts. Add in a few extra-cool mechanics, like rotating your phone to change gravity for your character, and Continuity 2 has a lot of fun and interesting gameplay to offer. It also has 50 levels and Game Center support to offer, as well.

Imagine the popular Mario Kart franchise on your iPhone – but instead of Mario, you've got Sonic the Hedgehog. That's Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing, a kart racer that blends solid 3-D graphics and tried-and-true gameplay with tight tilt controls. The game is filled with popular SEGA franchise characters for you to choose from to race through inventive environments. You get 10 characters to race with and against across 25 levels that make up three Grand Prix cups in Sonic & SEGA. The game also features support from Game Center, so you can log your best times on the Sonic & SEGA online leaderboards and see how good a racer you are compared to players all over the world.

Sequel to Telltale's acclaimed Puzzle Agent, the second game in the franchise picks up right where the first left off, continuing the story of the last title and adding a bunch more great puzzles, as well. In Puzzle Agent, you play FBI Agent Norman Tethers as he works to solve a case using his skills as a member of the Puzzle Division. But after solving the case last time around, he returns to Scoggins, Minnesota, because he still feels uneasy. Puzzle Agent 2 has the same great storytelling present in other titles from Telltale Games (this is the developer behind Back to the Future, for example), as well as lots of challenging and diverse puzzles to tease your brain.

Reports say FTC investigating Twitter (AP)
30 Jun 2011, 11:48 pm

WASHINGTON – Federal regulators are looking into the interactions between Twitter and a company called Ubermedia, which develops applications that help users follow and communicate with each other on Twitter's popular online messaging service, according to two published reports.

The Federal Trade Commission inquiry is still at a preliminary stage and the focus remains unclear, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

The Business Insider blog, which first reported the probe, said FTC antitrust investigators are studying how Twitter deals with outside companies that build applications for its messaging platform _such as photo-sharing, URL-shortening and advertising services — and whether it is trying to limit competition by buying or banning outside developers.

The FTC regularly looks into complaints — often filed by rivals — of anticompetitive behavior by companies in the technology sector. The initial probes do not always turn into full-blown investigations.

The Journal reported that Twitter blocked UberMedia from accessing messages on its platform, called "tweets," earlier this year, but has since restored access.

The FTC and Twitter declined comment. Ubermedia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Amazon Will Dump Affiliates To Fight California Tax Law (NewsFactor)
30 Jun 2011, 10:11 pm

Amazon.com is calling a new sales-tax law in California unconstitutional. Amazon appears ready to challenge the law, which states that having affiliates in the state is the same as online retailers having a physical presence there.

Amazon is moving to terminate its affiliate program in California. In a letter to affiliates, Amazon said it will end contracts with all California residents that are participants in the Amazon Associates Program as soon as the law goes into effect.

"We oppose this bill because it is unconstitutional and counterproductive. It is supported by big-box retailers, most of which are based outside California, that seek to harm the affiliate advertising programs of their competitors," the letter argued. "Similar legislation in other states has led to job and income losses, and little, if any, new tax revenue. We deeply regret that we must take this action."

No Beating Taxes

Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, said the California law puts increasing tax pressure on online retailers. In the consumer's mind, the offset for the shipping costs associated with online purchases is the savings on sales taxes. But California and other states that have enacted such laws have a different view.

"States are so hard up for cash, I think they are having a real issue providing an incentive for someone not to pay taxes in the state and have an advantage by so doing against companies that are paying taxes in the state," Enderle said.

"This is the future, whether Amazon or anybody else likes it or not. The reality is the states need the money and they are not going to give up sales-tax revenue if they can avoid it," he added. "In the end, they are going to find a way to tax Amazon for anything they sell in the state regardless. Think of this as an interim step."

Enderle isn't optimistic that Amazon can block the new law or work around it. It's true that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that a state can't collect sales tax from companies without a physical presence within the state, but California skirted that ruling by changing its definition of physical presence to cover companies with affiliates there.

"I don't know how you avoid paying taxes if in fact the law in the state is to pay taxes," Enderle said. "If the law was badly written, they'll just fix the law. So eventually they are going to address this issue. Amazon through litigation may be able to delay the impact. I don't think they can reasonably avoid it indefinitely."

The E-Commerce Impact

What about the impact on e-commerce? If more states move to charge sales tax on online purchases, will it dampen the market for online retail? Enderle doesn't think so.

E-commerce is ingrained in shopping habits. Shopping online isn't as much about saving money, he said, it's the convenience of online purchases.

"The online purchaser is the consumer who wants it easy and the person who wants it quick," Enderle said. "Taxes -- unless they are huge -- are not going to change that."

Google+ tops Android Apps of the Week

Posted June 30, 2011 4:30pm by Kristen Nicole Tags: Android Apps of the Week

Google is percolating something new, feeding us bit-by-bit the details of its latest social coup. The search engine is testing the waters of today's social web culture, launching Google+ in private beta. The project comes with an Android app, syncing photos and other content with your socially-enhanced Google profile. Google+'s biggest adversary, Facebook, has updated its Android app too, finally adding video uploads.

In Google's latest attempt at socializing its search engine, the company's revealing slices of its strategy, the latest being Google+. This new profile aggregates your social activity, centralizing the management of your personal, social cloud. With an accompanying Android app, you can upload and sync photos to private or public clouds, share your location, interact with groups called Circles, and group message with private groups called Huddles. The idea is to manage your stream of content only with the folks you select.

Facebook's added a significant update to its Android app, letting you upload video directly from the device's camera app. It's a tad late for such a feature update, considering how integral content sharing is amongst Android apps. Video upload has been an option for iPhone users for a while, and it's partially due to the difference between iOS and Android. Facebook's latest version 1.6 works best on Android 2.2 Froyo devices, a reflection of the app's closer integration with newer Android OS versions. Other upgrades include Facebook Pages access through feeds, which have been opened up to support more types of posts.

With the magazine craze in full swing on mobile devices, Dolphin Browser HD takes an opportunity to beautify the web. One of the notable new features is called Webzine, allowing you to fill your home page with media icons for all the topics and websites you want to follow. Click on an icon and you'll get a streamlined view of the site's contents, with oriented headlines, images and smidgens of text. Ads are stripped down in an effort to class-up the minimal real estate a mobile device offers, though such abbreviated excerpts are no match for dedicated webzine apps.

Communication is going to the cloud, and YouMail is making it easier to access. The latest version of its Android Visual Voicemail Plus app makes it simpler to search and add custom greetings for specified dialers or entire groups. A number search has been incorporated into the app as well, giving you additional information on a caller. A new magnifying glass icon appears during voicemail playback, querying the caller's phone number, city and state. There's even an option to view a caller's location on a map. YouMail demonstrates the high level of customization you can apply to your automated communication tools, but also acts as a centralized management tool as well.

Mozy is expanding its consumer back-up solution to include business users, taking another step into the enterprise. Similar to the existing MozyHome app for consumers, today's release gives Pro business users a mobile version as well. From here, MozyPro administrators can provide access to their end users, managing the mobile access of documents and sharing with clients and colleagues. With a distinct security slant, Mozy's really about the protected sharing of files, and this is a key component for business users sharing sensitive documents.

Noom Weight Loss is part of a growing brood of health apps, personalized to help you achieve your goals. This Android app does so through exercise tracking, food logs and motivation perks, all set around a custom weight loss plan for documenting your progress. Noom sends exercise reminders, charts your walking and yoga routines, and lets you share the entire process with friends via Facebook and Twitter. With support for uploading meal photos, home screen widgets for quick entries and visual charts, Noom Weight Loss aims to be a low-maintenance app, so as not to deter you from tracking or the exercising itself.

Microsoft pulls plug on home energy monitor (AFP)
30 Jun 2011, 9:19 pm

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Microsoft announced on Thursday it is pulling the plug on a free online home energy monitoring tool that allows consumers to gauge their usage and reduce consumption.

The US software giant's announcement it was discontinuing Microsoft Hohm came just days after Google said it was ending a similar service, PowerMeter.

In a blog post, Microsoft said it was shutting down Microsoft Hohm on May 31, 2012.

"The feedback from customers and partners has remained encouraging throughout Microsoft Hohm's beta period," Microsoft said.

"However, due to the slow overall market adoption of the service, we are instead focusing our efforts on products and solutions more capable of supporting longstanding growth within this evolving market," it said.

"Together with our partners, we will continue to develop technologies that help people and organizations reduce their impact on the environment," the Redmond, Washington-based company said.

Microsoft Hohm provided suggestions for energy conservation based on home energy input data and feedback from users.

Google announced last week it was shutting down PowerMeter, which tracked home electricity use, on September 16 after it failed to "catch on the way we would have hoped."

News Corp. Unloads MySpace for $35M, a $545M Loss (NewsFactor)
30 Jun 2011, 6:42 pm

In one of the biggest fire sales of the Internet age, News Corp. has unloaded MySpace for $35 million. Just four years ago, the social-networking site had a valuation of $12 billion.

News Corp. had reportedly been expecting a sale price of $100 million, which itself would have represented a huge drop from the $580 million the company paid for MySpace in 2005. MySpace's new owner is the ad network Specific Media, and News Corp. will get a minority equity stake in that company.

'Things Change'

Specific Media, based in California, said actor/musician/producer Justin Timberlake has made an investment in its company as part of an effort to revivify MySpace. Launched in 2003, MySpace was the most popular social-networking site from 2006 to 2008.

In addition to his entertainment career, Timberlake co-created the "denim lifestyle brand" William Rast and launched a spirits company called 901 Silver Tequila, the Tennman Records label, and the Mirimichi golf course in Tennessee.

Specific Media now has a platform to sell its ads to what is still a very sizable community, and it said it will unveil its plans for MySpace later this summer. Based on monthly unique visitors, MySpace had about 35 million visitors in May, while Facebook had nearly 160 million. The site also includes MySpace Music, with 38 million songs that are delivered to users via streaming music.

Michael Gartenberg, research director at the Gartner Group, said the price drop for MySpace is a "testament to how things can change so quickly in the social space." He added that, while the "days of MySpace as a dominant social space are over, the brand still has a core set of followers, primarily based around music," and it's conceivable that some sort of sustainable business model could evolve.

'Socially-Activated' Ads

Timberlake said "there's a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff, and just connect." He added that "MySpace has the potential to be that place," and Specific Media said it will be working with Timberlake to evolve the site "into the premiere digital destination for original shows, video content. and music."

Specific Media, founded by brothers Tim, Chris and Russell Vanderhook in 1999, also said it intends to leverage the site's existing infrastructure to "deploy socially activated advertising campaigns, enabling brands to turn their campaigns viral by allowing users to share their favorite ads with friends."

At its height, MySpace had 300 million members. Facebook currently has more than half a billion members worldwide, and MySpace has about 100 million, with about half of that total in the U.S.

MySpace is not the only social-networking site to soar, be acquired, and then crash. AOL spent $850 million for Bebo in 2008, only to sell it later for under $10 million.

VoiP firm 8x8 signs cloud partnership (Reuters)
30 Jun 2011, 6:16 pm

(Reuters) – Internet telephone company 8x8 Inc said it entered into a partnership with Virtual Computing Environment Company (VCE) to speed up deployment of its cloud computing services on a new platform, sending its shares up to an eight-year high.

VCE was formed by Cisco, EMC Corp with investments from VMware and Intel to tap into the fast-growing cloud computing market.

It developed the VBlock platform, which speeds up cloud computing as it provides network, storage, virtualization and management technologies in one place.

8x8 said adopting VBlock will help it accelerate its cloud-based offerings, cut costs, and broaden its customer base by targeting larger enterprise and government customers.

Shares of the Sunnyvale, California-based company were trading up almost 8 percent at $4.80 on Wednesday on Nasdaq. They rose to $4.84, earlier in the session.

Tests show wireless network could harm GPS systems (AP)
30 Jun 2011, 4:03 pm

WASHINGTON – Test results filed with federal regulators Thursday show that a proposed high-speed wireless broadband network being planned by a Virginia company called LightSquared could interfere with GPS systems used for everything from aviation to high-precision timing networks to consumer navigation devices.

The results were filed with the Federal Communications Commission by a technical working group created to study the extent of potential GPS interference that the LightSquared network would cause. The findings add to the debate about whether the FCC should permit LightSquared to proceed with its plans to launch a new nationwide wireless network that would compete with AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Although the FCC gave LightSquared approval in January, the agency said it would not let the network be turned on until GPS interference problems are resolved.

Germans fear cyber-crime as digital blackmail grows (Reuters)
30 Jun 2011, 1:44 pm

BERLIN (Reuters) – Germans are increasingly afraid of becoming the target of cyber-criminals, with 85 percent fearing thieves will steal their credit card data or gain online access to bank accounts.

According to a survey by German tech industry association Bitkom published on Thursday, the number of Internet users over the age of 14 fearing such an attack has risen to 85 percent this year compared with 75 percent in 2010.

Data confirm the problem is growing, prompting the German federal police (BKA) to warn Internet users that perpetrators are extremely innovative and can adapt to rapidly changing security measures.

Part of the problem is that one in five people still does not use any form of computer protection, Bitkom said.

Law enforcement around the world is scrambling meanwhile to combat cyber crime, while each week seems to brings a new attack -- from activists promoting a cause, to more serious security breaches and data thefts at Sony Corp, Citigroup or the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The various types of digital blackmail, for example, are rising as more people are coerced into paying some form or ransom so their stolen data won't be sold over the Internet or to put an end to cyber-attacks on corporate websites.

"Cyber-criminals are increasingly relying on social engineering. They try to gain access to sensitive information, by putting employees under pressure or taking advantage of their willingness to help," BKA President Joerg Ziercke said in a statement.

Last year, the number of cybercrimes in Germany increased by 19 percent while ensuing damages jumped by two-thirds to 61.5 million euros ($87.5 million), data from the federal police showed.

So-called "phishing" of online-bank data nearly doubled, with the average damage amounting to roughly 4,000 euros.

In an effort to combat cyber crime, Germany launched a cyber attack defense center this month.

In the United States, Defcon -- the world's biggest gathering of hackers held in Las Vegas every summer -- is taking a different approach.

This year it will kick off the first Defcon Kids conference for children between eight and 16 to learn the skills of computer hackers, as well as to protect themselves against cyber attacks.

U.S. federal agents plan to use the occasion to size up tech-savvy youngsters who could form the next generation of digital crime-fighters.

California Passes Law Forcing Web Retailers to Charge Sales Tax (PC Magazine)
29 Jun 2011, 10:26 pm

For Californians, the days of avoiding paying sales tax for items purchased on the Web ended Wednesday night.

California Gov. Jerry Brown passed a portion of the state budget on Wednesday night that would require Internet retailers with affiliates in the state of California to collect sales taxes from customers living there.

In retaliation, Amazon.com reportedly sent letters to its affiliates in the state, terminating its relationship with them.

The so-called budget trailer bill, ABx1 28, was authored by Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield (D-San Fernando Valley).

The law would require businesses on the Internet with affiliates in California to report and pay sales tax. California residents are required to pay so-called use taxes, but they are rarely, if ever, collected.

"Generally, if sales tax would apply when you buy physical merchandise in California, use tax applies when you make a similar purchase without tax from a business located outside the state," according to the California Board of Equalization's Web page. That includes Web sites like Amazon, which would lose that profit to the state. According to the Los Angeles Times, the savings would be about $200 million.

The Times also reported that Amazon.com had sent notices to its California affiliates, terminating its agreements with them. That's because the bill has a provision that triggers the sales tax clause us a California state resident refers a purchase to the retailer, including via an Internet link or Web site.

Amazon representatives could not be immediately reached for comment.

However, while Amazon may be the highest-profile company affected by the new law, other smaller Web retailers and service providers weren't happy, either.

"While the government has been trying to target Amazon and the big guys that they say are costing them hundreds of millions in tax revenue, Ebates has been arguing since the beginning that you're going to collect zero from them and hurt the 25,000 small businesses in the process," Rob Smahl, chief marketing officer for Ebates, said in an emailed statement. "What we're worried about now is the loss of jobs, loss of revenue for a bill that won't collect a dime."

A similar bill to enforce the collection of taxes by online affiliates of Amazon and others passed the California Senate in 2010, but Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill. Similar bills have passed in New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.

In Texas, the state comptroller has attempted to charge Amazon $269 million in what she claims is unpaid Texas state taxes. In response, Amazon sent a letter threatening to close a distribution center, according to The Austin Daily Statesman.

In February, Barnes & Noble launched a program to woo Amazon affiliates affected by Amazon's decision.

There are certain exceptions to the new California state law: small businesses who recorded less than $500,000 in revenue for the last 12 months wouldn't be subject to the law, provided that "total cumulative sales price from all of the retailer's sales" didn't exceed $10,000, the law says.

But that wouldn't apply to Amazon, whose revenue topped $5 billion for the most recent quarter.

Editor's Note: This story was updated at 7:42 PM Pt with comments from Ebates' Smahl.

Amazon protests California Web-sales tax plan (Reuters)
30 Jun 2011, 1:08 am

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc warned its 10,000-plus California sales affiliates on Wednesday that it may be forced to sever ties with them should the state begin taxing their online sales.

The wealthiest U.S. state became the latest -- on the heels of Illinois and Connecticut -- to be dropped by Amazon from its nationwide sales-affiliate program, which relies on in-state websites to drive its own online business.

Its affiliates, paid a fee when they funnel traffic to Amazon that results in a sale, have found themselves in the middle of a battle between Amazon and several states that argue the online retailer has a duty to collect sales taxes when those affiliates operate within their state.

Amazon counters that such taxes spur job and income losses. On Tuesday, California's legislature passed a budget that incorporates such an online sales tax and on Wednesday, Governor Jerry Brown signed the relevant bill.

"We oppose this bill because it is unconstitutional and counterproductive. It is supported by big-box retailers, most of which are based outside California, that seek to harm the affiliate advertising programs of their competitors," Amazon said in an email sent to Californian affiliates Wednesday.

"As a result, we will terminate contracts with all California residents that are participants in the Amazon Associates Program as of the date (if any) that the California law becomes effective."

Analysts say Amazon could cut its partnership with affiliates in more U.S. states that require the online retailer to collect sales taxes.

Many traditional chains such as Best Buy and Sears have openly voiced concerns about online-only retailers gaining an unfair advantage by avoiding sales taxes in states where they do not maintain a corporate presence.

Lawmakers in states -- many facing huge budget deficits -- say Amazon and other online retailers such as Overstock.com have a duty to collect tax because its affiliates operate locally.

Amazon has already announced plans to cancel its affiliate program in Illinois in response to the state's new law to target online retailers. Texas is considering taxing online sales as well.

LivingSocial moving ahead with $1 billion IPO: source (Reuters)
29 Jun 2011, 11:41 pm

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Online daily deal site LivingSocial is meeting with banks to discuss an initial public offering of about $1 billion, according to a source familiar the situation.

The amount values the Washington, D.C. based company in the range of $10 billion to $15 billion, according to the source.

A representative for LivingSocial declined to comment.

LivingSocial is the latest Internet startup seeking to woo investors who are piling into social media companies such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Groupon and Facebook.

Online gaming company Zynga is expected to file for its IPO on Thursday that could value the company as high as $20 billion.

LivingSocial is the No. 2 U.S. social deal site behind Groupon, which filed for its public debut and plans to raise $750 million that could value the company at $15 billion to $20 billion.

LivingSocial offers discounts on restaurant dining, lodging and other items, alerting its 39 million members via email about the deals. It gets its revenue from local merchants that agree to the discounts.

The company expects revenue of $1 billion this year.

In April, LivingSocial raised $400 million in a round of funding that included LightSpeed Venture Partners and Amazon giving it a value of about $3 billion.

LivingSocial is expected to pick lead underwriting banks by the end of the week, according to CNBC, which first reported the news.

Study finds that e-reader growth has surpassed tablets in recent months (Appolicious)
29 Jun 2011, 11:30 pm

For the first time since the Pew Internet Project began tracking e-reader use in spring 2009, ownership of the portable reading devices has reached double digits. The project found that e-reader growth has accelerated in the past six months, as tablet growth has stagnated slightly, following a steep rise in the number of users after last year's iPad launch.

Twelve percent of U.S. adults owned a Kindle, Nook or other e-reader as of May, compared with 6 percent last November. During the same period, tablet computer ownership, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom and iPad, rose to 8 percent from 5 percent. Approximately 3 percent of adults responding to the May survey reported having both a tablet and an e-reader.

The reason for the more rapid rise of e-reader use when compared with tablets could be due to the fact that e-readers such as the Nook Color are becoming more like tablets themselves, offering apps of all types, full-color displays and mobile operating systems such as Android. Additionally, e-readers offer such features at a much lower price point than tablets such as the iPad.

Pew also noted demographic patterns that were similar between tablet and e-reader users, although men are more likely to own tablets than women. Also, it was found that the uptake of e-readers in the past few months by parents has grown more than by non-parents. E-reader ownership among adults aged 18 to 49 grew at the most rapid pace of all age groups, while tablet ownership grew most among adults aged 18 to 29.

With Amazon potentially launching a tablet in the near future, there is great potential for tablet uptake to increase at the same rate or faster than e-reader uptake, most likely depending on the price points and features offered on such a device. Although with Barnes & Noble seeking to turn its e-reading device into a more of a tablet with each launch, Apple and other tablet makers are going to have to continue to step-up their mobile computing game to compete in this race.

News Corp. sells ailing Myspace for $35 million (AFP)
29 Jun 2011, 9:34 pm

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Ailing social network Myspace has been sold by News Corp. to advertising network Specific Media for $35 million, the All Things Digital technology blog reported on Wednesday.

The News Corp.-owned Silicon Valley blog said the deal includes slashing about half of Myspace's staff of between 400 and 500 people.

News Corp., which bought Myspace in 2005 for $580 million, would retain a five to 10 percent stake in the social network, All Things Digital said.

It said the deal was being completed on Wednesday although it has not yet been officially signed.

A Myspace spokeswoman contacted by AFP said: "Nothing officially has been announced regarding the transaction."

According to the News Corp.-owned Wall Street Journal there were two leading bidders for Myspace -- the digital ad-targeting firm Specific Media and private equity firm Golden Gate Capital.

Myspace was the leading social networking site when it was bought by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. six years ago but it has since been eclipsed by Facebook.

News Corp. chief operating officer Chase Carey put Myspace on notice in November, saying the losses at the social network were "unsustainable."

News Corp. does not break out results for Myspace in its earnings but the "other" segment, which includes the social network, reported a second quarter operating loss of $156 million, $31 million wider than a year earlier.

Vulnerabilities found in Google Chrome PC security (Reuters)
29 Jun 2011, 9:54 pm

BOSTON (Reuters) – Google Inc brags that computers running its recently released Chrome operating system are a lot safer than traditional PCs, partly because user data is stored in the Internet cloud and not on the machine.

Yet researchers at an independent computer security firm warn that the Chrome PC's reliance on Web computing makes it vulnerable to the same attacks that hackers have been launching on websites and Web browsers for years.

Matt Johansen, a researcher with WhiteHat Security, said he identified a flaw in a Chrome OS note-taking application that he exploited to take control of a Google email account. He reported it to Google, which fixed the problem and gave him a $1,000 reward for pointing it out.

Johansen said he has since discovered other applications with the same security flaw.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg," he told Reuters. "This is just evolving around us. We can see this becoming a whole new field of malware."

Google is betting that the launch of its Web-centric Chrome OS PCs will help reshape the decades-old personal computer industry, challenging entrenched players such as Microsoft Corp and Apple Corp. The first Chrome PC laptop, from Samsung, went on sale earlier this month. Early reviews have been mixed, with some influential technology hands noting that the concept of an always-Internet-connected PC may be ahead of its time and not ideal for mainstream users.

One key to hacking Chrome OS is to capture data as it travels between the Chrome browser and the cloud, Johansen said. Hackers have until now mostly targeted data that sits on a machine's hard drive.

"I can get at your online banking or your FaceBook profile or your email as it is being loaded in the browser," he said. "If I can exploit some kind of Web application to access that data, then I couldn't care less what is on the hard drive."

Johansen declined to identify the applications with the security bugs. He and colleague Kyle Osborn are holding back that information for a presentation at Black Hat, a prestigious hacking conference to be held this August in Las Vegas.

Those applications belong to a class of software programs known as "extensions," which users download from the Google Chrome Web Store. Extensions are essentially applications that run inside browsers

The bulk of Chrome OS extensions are written by independent software developers, not by Google.

Johansen said the problem with the extensions is related to a design flaw in Google Chrome OS: the operating system gives extensions sweeping rights to access data stored on the cloud.

"Chrome is trusting these extensions more than it would be trusting just another website," he said.

Executives at Google said they are looking to improve procedures that screen extensions for vulnerabilities before clearing them for the Chrome Web Store.

Caesar Sengupta, director of Chrome OS, said the company was exploring "various ways" of trying to automatically tag questionable extensions. Yet he said that Google did not want to make it onerous for developers to get their extensions distributed through the marketplace.

"We are trying to create a system that -- like the Web -- is open," he said.

Alex Stamos, a security expert with iSec Partners who helped develop the security system for Chrome OS, said that it would be unfair to condemn the overall security of the new operating system just because of the issues cited by the WhiteHat researchers.

"While things might not be perfect, we are talking about a much more controlled and secure environment than you have on Windows and Mac PCs," he said.

Gaza flotilla makes Internet splash (Reuters)
29 Jun 2011, 9:16 pm

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – They're all aTwitter about the flotilla.

It may still be anyone's guess when a small international convoy of vessels carrying pro-Palestinian activists and aid will set sail from Greece to the Gaza Strip in a challenge to Israel's naval blockade of the territory run by Hamas Islamists.

But, mindful of the bloodshed at sea and global outcry that marked a similar event last year, the opposing sides are already battling for hearts and minds in the social and mainstream media.

An array of Facebook pages, websites and tweets posted by organizers of "Freedom Flotilla II" (www.freedomflotilla.eu), say they are on a humanitarian mission of peace. Waging its own public relations campaign, Israel says the activists could be plotting violence.

A text message sent to reporters by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office (www.facebook.com/IsraeliPM) on Monday quoted unnamed "Israeli officials" as saying that flotilla organizers might use chemicals against Israeli troops sent to intercept the convoy.

The next day, the Israeli military, which is under orders to prevent the ships from reaching the Gaza Strip, went on the record with the same accusation.

The "US Boat to Gaza" used its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/USBOATTOGAZA) and tweets to challenge the allegation. The group, which has dubbed its vessel "The Audacity of Hope," said Israel was "fabricating horror stories about hundreds of unarmed civilians in the flotilla."

Israel says the blockade, enforced since 2006, is aimed at stopping more weapons from reaching Hamas, a militant group shunned by the West over its refusal to recognize Israel and renounce violence. Palestinians and their supporters say the measure is illegal and constitutes collective punishment.

HIGH STAKES

The stakes are high -- a year ago, nine Turkish activists, including a dual U.S.-Turkish national, were killed in clashes with Israeli soldiers who raided a Gaza-bound convoy in the eastern Mediterranean.

Israeli-Turkish relations neared breaking point after the bloodshed and an international outcry led to Israel easing its land blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Israel has urged foreign governments not to let the new convoy of about 10 ships get under way. Organizers in Athens have accused Greece, where some of them are docked, of raising bureaucratic obstacles and bowing to Israeli pressure.

Flotilla groups and Israel have also used YouTube to make their case -- in at least one instance in a video that looks to have been a hoax.

Organizers of the convoy said the propeller of one ship was cut in Piraeus harbor near Athens on Monday, and they accused Israel of sabotage. A video uploaded to YouTube by "digital flotilla" showed the damage and an interview with the boat's captain.

Another YouTube video featured a man who identified himself as "Marc," an American gay rights activist (www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhmBbGFJleU&feature=player_embedded). He said he had offered flotilla organizers the support of a network of gay activists but they had turned him down.

"It was hurtful," he complained, accusing Hamas of homophobia. Israel's Government Press Office and the Foreign Ministry (www.facebook.com/IsraelMFA?v=wall), as well as an intern in Netanyahu's office linked to the video on their Twitter feeds.

A pro-Palestinian website later said the video, which appeared to have been professionally made, was bogus and identified the man as a Tel Aviv actor.

A photo of the actor on an Israeli celebrities website matched the man in the video.

News Corp sells Myspace, ending six-year saga (Reuters)
29 Jun 2011, 8:13 pm

NEW YORK (Reuters) – News Corp has agreed to sell social media site Myspace for about $35 million to online advertising company Specific Media, according to a source familiar with the transaction.

The deal, expected to close later on Wednesday, is a mix of cash and stock with News Corp retaining about 5 percent.

Additionally, more than 50 percent of Myspace's 500-strong workforce is expected to be laid off because of the sale, the source said.

The source is not authorized to speak publicly because the deal has not yet closed.

The sale of Myspace caps six years of ownership under Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, which swooped in to buy Myspace in 2005 for $580 million beating out rival Viacom for what was then one of the world's hottest social networking sites.
